Sizing & Flow Rate (GPM)

What does GPM (flow rate) mean, and why does it matter?

GPM is gallons per minute, the peak amount of water your system can supply at once without a drop in pressure. For softeners it also sets the grain capacity between regenerations. Sizing it to your home keeps full pressure at every tap and the right capacity for your water.

How do I choose the right GPM for my home?

Match it to your number of bathrooms and the fixtures likely to run at the same time. As a rule of thumb: 10 GPM suits 1 to 2 bathrooms, 15 GPM suits 3 to 4, and 20 GPM suits 4 or more. A shower uses about 2.5 GPM. Every flow-rate product page has a "Which flow rate is right for you?" section with the details.

What happens if my system is undersized?

Pressure drops when several fixtures run together, a softener regenerates too often and wears its resin faster, and a filter's media exhausts sooner. When you're between sizes, it's better to size up.

What is grain capacity?

It's how much hardness a softener removes before it needs to regenerate, measured in grains. Larger systems hold more resin and more capacity, so they regenerate less often. For example, a 10 GPM softener is about 35,000 grains, 15 GPM about 53,000, and 20 GPM about 70,000.

Water Softeners

What is hard water, and is it harmful?

Hard water is water with dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from rock as it moves through the ground. It is not a health hazard. It is a cost and nuisance issue: scale on fixtures and the water heater, spots on glassware, stiff laundry, more soap and cleaning, and shorter appliance life.

How does a water softener work?

Through ion exchange. Water passes through a bed of resin beads that swap the hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium. When the resin fills up, the system regenerates on a four-step cycle: backwash, brine draw, slow rinse, and brine-tank refill, then it's ready again.

What is resin cross-linkage, and does 8% vs 10% matter?

Cross-linkage is how tightly the resin beads are bonded. Higher cross-linked (10%) resin is physically harder, carries a higher exchange capacity, and resists breakdown from chlorine, iron, and manganese far better than standard 8% resin. That durability is why it can back a longer resin warranty.

How often does a softener regenerate?

Typically every 4 to 7 days, depending on your hardness and how much water you use. Metered (on-demand) valves regenerate based on actual usage rather than a fixed timer, which saves salt and water.

Does softened water taste salty?

No. Softening adds a small amount of sodium in proportion to your hardness, far below what you would taste in most water. If sodium is a concern, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap removes it from your drinking water.

Salt-based softener vs. salt-free conditioner, what's the difference?

A salt-based softener actually removes the hardness minerals, so you get classic soft water with no scale and no spots. A salt-free conditioner changes the minerals so they're less likely to stick as scale, without removing them or adding sodium. Softeners are the choice for true soft water; conditioners suit no-salt preferences and scale control.

Will a softener remove chlorine or iron?

A softener handles hardness and small amounts of dissolved iron. For chlorine, taste, and odor you'll want a carbon filter, and for staining-level iron a dedicated iron filter installed ahead of the softener.

Well Water (Iron, Sulfur & pH)

Why is well water called "problem water"?

Because no two wells are alike and what's in the ground is what comes out of your tap, with no city treatment in between. Iron, manganese, sulfur, hardness, sediment, tannins, nitrates, and bacteria can all appear in different combinations. A water test is the only way to know what to treat.

Should the iron filter or the softener come first?

The iron filter goes first. Removing iron and sulfur before the softener protects the softening resin from fouling and keeps both systems working longer. Order matters on well water, which is why we design the sequence around your test.

What causes the rotten-egg smell, and how is it removed?

It's hydrogen sulfide, a dissolved gas. Air-injection and advanced-oxidation systems oxidize the gas and filter it out, with no chemicals to buy or refill.

Why does pH matter for iron removal?

Acidic well water keeps iron dissolved, so it slips through the filter. A backwashing pH neutralizer raises the pH first, so the greensand media can capture and remove the iron at full efficiency. See iron & manganese systems →

Do I really need a water test for a well?

Yes. Well water varies from property to property, and iron type, sulfur level, hardness, pH, and contaminants all change the design and sizing. Testing means you treat what you actually have.

Reverse Osmosis & Drinking Water

What does reverse osmosis remove?

RO pushes water through a fine membrane that reduces total dissolved solids and the dissolved contaminants carbon can't catch, including arsenic, lead, chromium, sodium, mercury, and nitrates, for the cleanest possible glass, coffee, and ice.

Do I need RO if I already have a whole-house filter?

They do different jobs. A whole-house filter improves water at every tap. Reverse osmosis polishes your drinking and cooking water to bottled quality at the kitchen sink. Many homes run both.

How often do RO filters need changing?

On a standard under-sink RO, the pre and post filters are replaced roughly every 6 to 12 months and the membrane every few years. On the tankless Infinity RO, the PCT composite filter lasts 8 to 12 months and the membrane 12 to 24 months. See the Infinity Tankless RO →

What is the tankless Infinity RO's advantage?

Whole-House & Sediment Filters

What does a whole-house carbon filter do?

It removes chlorine, chloramine, taste, and odor across the whole home, so every shower, tap, and appliance gets cleaner water. Our backwashing filters clean themselves, so there are no cartridges to change.

Does catalytic carbon remove chloramine?

Yes. Chloramine is harder to remove than plain chlorine, and catalytic carbon is the media designed for it. If your city uses chloramine, choose a catalytic carbon filter rather than standard carbon.

How long does the filter media last?

Whole-house backwashing carbon media typically lasts 5 to 10 years depending on your water and use. Because the filter backwashes itself, there are no cartridges to swap in between.

What does a sediment filter do, and do I need one?

It catches sand, silt, and rust before they reach your fixtures and the systems downstream. It's the foundation of most setups, protecting softeners, filters, and RO from grit and extending their life.

Installation & Maintenance

Where do these systems install?

Whole-home systems install at the main water line where it enters the house, after the pressure tank or meter, with a nearby drain for the backwash cycle and a standard outlet for smart or metered valves. Under-sink RO installs at the kitchen sink with a drain saddle and a faucet hole.

What maintenance does each system need?

Softeners: keep the brine tank topped up with salt and occasionally add a resin cleaner. Backwashing filters: essentially none, they self-clean and the media lasts years. Reverse osmosis: change the filters on schedule. We'll help you stay on track.

Do I need a drain and an outlet?

Yes, most whole-home systems need a nearby drain for the backwash or regeneration cycle and a standard electrical outlet for the smart or metered valve. Our team confirms the requirements before installation.

Troubleshooting

My water still feels hard after installing a softener.

Check three things first: that the brine tank has salt, that the bypass valve is in the "service" (not bypass) position, and that the system is regenerating on schedule. If all three are fine, the softener may be undersized for your hardness, contact us and we'll check the numbers.

My water pressure dropped after installation.

The most common causes are a clogged sediment prefilter, a bypass or valve set incorrectly, or a system sized below your peak demand. Replacing or cleaning the prefilter and confirming the valve position resolves most cases.

My softener is using too much or too little salt.

Salt use is tied to your hardness setting and household size. If the settings don't match your actual water and usage, the system regenerates too often or not enough. We can help you dial in the program.

The rotten-egg smell came back on my well.

On air-injection systems, the air pocket that oxidizes the sulfur can need a refresh, and the media and pH should be checked. If the smell returns quickly, the system may need servicing or a pH neutralizer ahead of it.

My RO water tastes off or flows slowly.

Both are usually a sign the filters or membrane are due for replacement, or that feed pressure is low. Replace the filters on schedule and check your incoming pressure. Still stuck? Reach out and we'll walk through it.
