Well water questions, answered
Should the iron filter or the softener come first?
The iron filter goes first. Removing iron and sulfur before the softener protects the softening resin from fouling and keeps both systems working longer. Order matters on well water, which is why we design the sequence around your test.
What causes the rotten-egg smell, and how is it removed?
It is hydrogen sulfide, a dissolved gas. Air-injection and advanced-oxidation systems oxidize the gas and filter it out, with no chemicals to buy or refill.
Will a softener alone clean up my well water?
A softener handles hardness. If your well also has iron, sulfur, sediment, tannin, nitrates, or bacteria, those each need their own treatment ahead of or alongside the softener.
Does UV disinfection need a filter in front of it?
Usually yes. UV needs clear water to work, so sediment and iron are removed first. Cloudy water can shield organisms from the light, so pre-filtration comes before the UV stage.
Are nitrates dangerous, and how are they treated?
Elevated nitrate is a recognized health concern, especially for infants and pregnant women. It is invisible and tasteless, so testing is essential. Treat the whole home with a nitrate system, or protect drinking water with reverse osmosis, or both.
Do I really need a water test first?
Yes. Well water varies from property to property, and iron type, sulfur level, hardness, and contaminants all change the design. A test means you treat what you actually have and size it correctly.
