Straight Answers
What This Softener Won't Do
A softener is a specialist, not a cure-all. Here's what it doesn't handle, and what does. If you were sold a softener as the fix for all three of these, you were sold wrong.
It won't reduce dissolved solids
Ion exchange trades hardness minerals for sodium, it doesn't lower total dissolved solids. If your goal is drinking water with less of everything in it, that's reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap, and the two are commonly installed together.
It won't handle iron or sulfur alone
A softener manages small amounts of dissolved iron as part of ion exchange. It is not an iron filter. Heavy iron, sulfur, or rotten-egg odor, common on well water, needs dedicated pretreatment ahead of the softener, or the iron fouls the resin and shortens its life.
It won't change taste or odor
Chlorine taste and pool smell are a carbon filtration job, not a softening job. This system removes hardness; it leaves chlorine alone. If that's your complaint, whole-home carbon is what fixes it, and it protects the resin bed while it's at it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what size I need?
Bathroom count and peak simultaneous use matter more than how many people live in the house, two people with four bathrooms can out-demand five people with two. The other half is your hardness in grains per gallon, which is what the free water test measures. 360 Water Systems puts those two numbers together and sizes it. As a rough starting point: 10 GPM for 1–2 baths, 15 GPM for 2–3, 20 GPM for 3 or more.
Will my water taste salty?
No. The salt goes into the brine tank to recharge the resin, not into your drinking water. What ends up in the softened water is a small amount of sodium released during the ion exchange, the amount scales with how hard your water was to begin with. If you're on a sodium-restricted diet, ask 360 Water Systems about a potassium chloride alternative, or pair the softener with a reverse-osmosis system at the kitchen tap.
Is soft water bad for my water heater?
The opposite, scale buildup is what makes a heater work harder and fail early, and softening prevents that buildup at the source. This is one of the main reasons homeowners in hard-water areas install one.
Will it remove iron from my water?
A softener handles small amounts of dissolved (clear-water) iron as part of ion exchange, but it is not an iron filter and it will not handle heavy iron, sulfur, or the orange staining that comes with them. If your water test shows meaningful iron, common on well water, 360 Water Systems will recommend a dedicated iron and sulfur filter ahead of the softener. Putting a softener alone on high-iron water fouls the resin and shortens its life.
How much salt will I go through?
It depends on your hardness, your water use, and which tier you install, which is exactly why the valve meters instead of guessing. Because regeneration is triggered by actual gallons used against grain capacity, you use salt when the resin is genuinely spent rather than on a fixed schedule. Do I also need a filter?
They solve different problems. This softener removes hardness, the scale, spots, and film. It does not reduce chlorine taste or odor. If your water smells like a swimming pool, that's a job for whole-home carbon filtration, and the two systems are commonly installed together. 360 Water Systems will tell you honestly which one your water actually needs after the test.
